Doing our best
Today, in TOK Jeff had brought up how, even after learning that English was the easiest EE subject, none of the DipCans in our grade chose to do English. Also, in Sam's blog, he had talked about how busy we all are. While I am sure that all students our age are busy, these two events got me thinking about what that certain drive is. From what I have seen, all of the 2013 DipCans have, to varying degrees, this quality. I think that we all have this drive to do as much as we can (sometimes more) and to the best of our abilities. This is not to say that people who arent DipCans don't have this drive, but it makes me wonder what makes us this way? Do we put it upon ourselves? And if so, then why do we do this? If we don't put it on ourselves, was it our parents pushing us when we were little? It is just a weird thought for me to that people don't have the drive to do everything they do to the best of their ability.

I think not everyone likes everything that they do, so they don't do it all to the best of their ability because they simply don't enjoy it. I also think, having observed the football players, that they don't have enough time to do everything to the best of their ability and they have to learn to pick what they want to do best at because of the time crunch.
ReplyDeleteI also think that there are those of us that we're taught as a kid to care about the work we do, and put our best into everything we do. I think that our parents have told us that we ought to care about education, while others' parents act as if they don't care. I also think that to some degree we put it on ourselves, that we want to do our best, because there are always those kids who do the opposite of everything they're parents say.
Speak for yourselves, I'm still having trouble pushing myself. I do what I'm comfortable with, yet that ends up getting me behind. I don't know why I find it so hard to stay driven and focused.
ReplyDeleteIB, from what I have gained from it, has taught us that anything is possible. Well, not everything, but we always can go one step further each time, and by the time we are done, we're ten steps further ahead than we thought possible. Plus, I can say from the times that I have given it my all that it is sooooooooo satisfying when you get the A.
I think that plenty of people do things to the best of their ability but sometimes it's just not enough to get that A or B in a class. I know for a fact that with time crunches I have to prioritize my homework because I'm always at practice by seven at night and there are days where I'm just too tired to get all the work done that needs to be done. My parents drilled good grades but when I decided to proceed with the IB program they tried to talk me out of it cause they'd rather have me get all A's rather then something lower because I was trying to challenge myself. I think that without self motivation a person will not try their best at the things put in front of them.
ReplyDeleteI know that for me part of what drives me to do so well is myself, but I think I got that from my parents. In my family we have a motto "Anything worth doing is worth overdoing" which we live by. We all strive to make everything we are involved in worthwhile and outstanding, even if it's difficult and time consuming. I apply this to theatre and school, and any other projects. Overall, I think it's a combination of parental influences and who we are ourselves that drives us to be great students and peopel.
ReplyDeleteFor me personally, it is the desire to succeed that I give myself that drives me to work hard in school. My parents are supportive, but they did not force me to choose the IB Diploma. I can't really explain it, but it seems from day one that I have always pushed myself to do my best in all areas of my life. It seems that this is just an innate quality that I have in myself. I know other people have other reasons for their intense motivation, but as long as we have it, I think it's a good thing.
